North of Everything

Steigen. Sixty-two miles inside the Arctic Circle — further north than Iceland, further north than most of Alaska. The road out here didn't exist until the 1990s; before that, the only way in was by boat, the way it's been since the 1600s. You'll fly into Bodø, then a fast boat to Nordskot, then a smaller boat still, threading between islands most maps don't bother naming. In September, the sun barely sets. This isn't a retreat with a view of the wilderness. It's inside it.

Two Explorers, One Strait

Across a narrow channel from each other sit two islands, each bought and rebuilt by Norwegian explorers who chose this as their home. Randi Skaug, the first Norwegian woman to summit Everest, bought Naustholmen and built a place for storytelling and adventure. Just across the water, Børge Ousland — the first person to walk to the North Pole alone, the first to cross Antarctica alone — turned an old fishing trading post into Manshausen. Randi told me it was seeing what Børge did showed her what this place could become. Two explorers, one strait, decades of stories between, and in September 2027, we hear them live at their homes.

I Needed to Bring People Back

Last time, we didn't meet Børge because he was away on the ice. Angus at Manshausen, told me: “that's another reason you have to come back”. Adrien, our adventure guide, took me on a sea eagle expedition. I've never seen so many, wingspan after wingspan soaring and fishing right in the water. It was that day I was convinced to come back. Randi and I talked about why not bring yogis this far north? All you need to bring is your yoga mat. Everything else is here, waiting.

And the reason we can go to dinner at Randi's table, the cave, the fishing boat, the whole trip comes from a friendship that started on a bridge in Bhutan over 15 years ago with my friend Torunn.
